Lion Dance Modelling
The traditional southern lion is simple in shape, and the lion's body has only a simple "lion quilt". When dancing the lion head, he emphasises horsesteps and queues, and needs to show the heroism of the lion, but Fu Tong's South Lion is rarely seen today.
In the early days, the South Lions were mainly coloured yellow, red and black, representing the three heroes of the Three Kingdoms: the Yellow Lion represents Liu Bei, also known as the "Rui Lion": the yellow-face coloured white beard, and there are three moneys behind the brain, representing wisdom, benevolence and courage. The red lion represents Guan Yu, which is for the "wakening lion": the red-faced black beard, with two copper coins behind the brain, representing wisdom and bravery. The black lion stands for Zhang Fei, also known as the "roy lion": black-faced, young and vigourous, with a single amount of money behind his head, representing courage.
